5 good reasons to adopt e-learning in schools

Although lagging behind other countries, training technology has also entered schools in Italy for several years. However, the question remains on the use of new teaching methods that can take the place of obsolete and poorly efficient models.

One of the main critical points in this sense emerges from the difficulty in transferring to the teachers the potential and the advantages offered by new technologies. When we talk about technologies we refer to both tools, such as personal computers, video projectors, Internet networks, and resources, such as multimedia material, open source applications on the web etc.
For example, using e-learning in schools could be very beneficial to offer new learning opportunities to students in a way that does not replace traditional learning, but that integrates and enriches it.
Here are 5 advantages that the school system could draw from the use of distance learning.

1. e-Learning helps to guarantee equal opportunities in access to education

Traditional learning methods are focused on the presence of teachers and students in the classroom. Yet, even today there are too many cases in which access to education is not always 100% guaranteed for students, especially those with disabilities.

Using tools such as video lessons or downloading handouts and other educational material that can also be used in off-line mode helps students who are unable, even for short periods of time, to be present in the classroom not to lose the thread of school programs.

2. Allows access to a wide and heterogeneous range of teaching materials

While the traditional school proposes the book as the main tool for learning, e-learning provides a really wide choice of teaching materials, usable not only in textual but also audiovisual form (e-books, presentations, blogs, podcasts, wiki etc.).

As students fall into the category of digital natives, it is important that the school finds the way to integrate new devices as tools to support learning, interpreting them as an opportunity to enhance cognitive and mnemonic resources and not as a limitation to be prohibited .

3. Facilitates shared learning

At first glance, one might think that e-learning develops in a direction that favors learning in the individual dimension only. Structuring e-learning paths with the use of chats, groups and forums can help the student not to feel alone, having at any time the opportunity to interact with other students and also with teachers.

4. Makes learning flexible and more enjoyable

Integrating e-learning paths to support the traditional teaching methodology allows schoolchildren to use the teaching material made available by the school or by the teachers at any time and in any place, a condition that may prove to be favorable in ensuring that learning becomes a moment lived with less anxiety and greater pleasure.

5. e-Learning stimulates the recovery and reinforcement activities and the curiosity of the students

e-Learning seems to be the ideal solution for students who need recovery and reinforcement activities. An example comes from the summer courses that the school manages to deliver with great difficulty and which, in any case, are often experienced with dissatisfaction by the students.

Leaving the student with the opportunity to manage the recovery activity according to the times and rhythms chosen by themselves, perhaps even through online courses that are not necessarily directly accessible on video, could prove to be a sensible and profitable choice for all parties. Moreover, thanks to the inexhaustible sources of information to which the Internet guarantees access, the student has the possibility to deepen the disciplinary topics taking into consideration also different points of view.
